Coming into the cooler months of the year big Calamari appear in numbers off of Sydney, chasing these cephlapods is a great way to get some cracker livebait, a feed or just to pass the time when the fishing is slow. The staff at Ottos Tackle World have put the Daiwa Emeraldas Peak jigs to the test and are thoroughly impressed by their quality, and most importantly their ability to catch squid!

These jigs are covered in a high quality premium cloth which keeps it's shape, even after heavy use. Most Squid Jigs appear as if they are falling apart after a few solid sessions, as Calimari, Arrow Squid and Cuttlefish have sharp beaks which can damage your jigs. Daiwa seem to have overcome this issue in the new Emeraldas Peak range as even after multiple session our 3.0 & 3.5 sized jigs are nicely intact. The hooks on the Peak jigs are ultra sticky and seem to find their way into a Squids tentacles even with the smallest contact, as long as you wash your jigs they wont rust and if you bend the hooks out on a snag they will stay strong even if you bend them back into shape.
Peak jigs have a slow and natural sinking rate which Calimari go crazy for, the combination of the Emeraldas Peaks horizontal slow sinking apperance and a nice bit of current or wash to move the jig around naturally will help you catch Squid even when they are at their most finicky.
These jigs come in 3 sizes and the option for rattle or non-rattle bodies. Therefore whether you are a harbour fisherman, rockfisho or need something for off the boat there's a jig for you.
*Big sinkers help these jigs get down to 20-30m
The bigger 3.5in jig weighs 19.5g meaning you'll get a huge cast out of them which is handy if you are landbased or want to cast at washes and rock ledges from the boat. Despite it's weight the 3.5in still has a slow, natural sinking action although it'll certainly get to the bottom on those windy days or if you are fishing in heavy current.
The 3.0 sized jig weighs 14.5g so you'll still get a long cast from it, although this jig has a considerably smaller profile than its big brother so its a good option if the Squid are smaller or are off the bite.
The smallest size, 2.5in jig will work great in the harbour over those shallow weed patches. Big Calis will still eat this jig but you'll find that you will also pick up alot of smaller Squid and Cuttlefish, great if you are looking to collect livebaits for pelagic fish. The 2.5 will run well on a paternoster rig out in deeper water if you need some extra weight to get down.
We currently have these jigs going at 50% off! So get in whilst you can as they are going fast..
* Even smaller squid love the 3.5 sized jigs
