The Tyrnos and Backbone Elite Combos are no fuss get the job done combos, they are very well priced and very good quality. We have chosen the Shimano Tyrnos overhead reels because they are a robust and long lasting reel that will not miss a beat even on the biggest fish, and having that reliability is a must when chasing prize game fish. The Shimano Backbone rod we have chose because they are the best value for money game rod on the market and in particular we have chosen the roller tip models as you do not need a fully rollered rod and a roller not rolling (not taken care of) is worse than a guide. This means you only have one roller to worry about. We have all line classes available so you can pick depending on what your targeting.  The line these combos come spooled with is Yellow IGFA Black Magic, a line trusted by us that has one of the thinnest diameter on the market and is a long lasting very abrasive resistant line.

What combo should I choose? When choosing a game combo you should think about what size of fish you are targeting, not to say the 15kg will not catch a monster.. But the heavier line classes make it easier on you. But do keep in mind the lighter 15kg combos are lighter in the hand when fighting fish so for younger kids and people getting started the 15kg is easier. The 24kg is the best choice for chasing Marlin and Tuna, and the 37kg is the best if you want to target big Tuna as the Heavier Line gives you more control over stubborn Tuna that don’t want to come up.

There are eight rods in the 2018 Backbone elite overhead range, a 10kg stick with fixed guides and a roller tip, and three 15kg options in a selection of fixed guides, fixed guides with a roller tip, or fully rollered. The same choices are available in 24kg, and finally there’s a serious 37kg weapon with a roller tip. Of single-piece construction and 1.7m (5’ 7”) in length, the Backbone Elite blanks now utilise Shimano’s legendary TC3 material, which is the same three-ply graphite weave the early Tiagra Game Series rods were built on. The long EVA fighting foregrip has a new shape, and the Slick Butts are durable and make it easy to remove a loaded up rod from a holder. The cosmetic has also been upgraded to a traditional game fishing colour scheme of black, gold and silver, making these rods an even sweeter pairing with Shimano’s TLD and Tyrnos lever drag reels.
