Deep Dropping

Deep Dropping / Dendoh Fishing

Deep drop fishing is a great way to explore unfished territory, chasing large and tasty demersal fish from the depths. As technology advances deep drop / dendoh fishing has become easier and more accessible to anglers. Electric reels winch in heavy weights and fish for you, modern sounders help us pinpoint where fish are congregating even in 300m+ of water. We even have portable batteries which strap onto your combo.

Common species to target whilst deep dropping include Bar Cod, Hapuka, Bass Grouper, Blue Eye Cod, Gemfish and more.

Getting into deep dropping can seem overwhelming, we can assue you that once you have the basics down. Targeting fish in deep water, far off the continental shelf will be as easy as wetting a line down at the local wharf!

DENDOH - デンドー
(Japanese) Meaning: Electrical Conduction or Transmission

Deep Dropping In The Tropics

Tropical areas, close to the equator offer some of the most impressive deep dropping grounds on the planet. Sheer drop offs from shallow reef flats to 500 meter deep ravines are common in the coral seal.

The Pacific Islands, such as Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji are all premium locations for deep drop fishing. The volcanic activity that formed many of these islands continues down below the surface, creating the ideal hunting ground for large fish far down below the surface.

You can taget Ruby Snapper, Ironjaw, Flametail and even reef fish such as Coral Trout and Maori Sea Perch that venture off the shallow flats and into the depths.

Light Deep Dropping (PE 3-5)

Deep dropping with lighter line, 30lb to 50lb is a popular way to fish grounds from 50 meters upto about 150 meters.

Using a light, soft tip rod and thin braid gives the angler great feel. Your baits will get to the bottom faster which allows you to fish vertically and without slack. Light deep drop rods typically have a slower taper, absorbing the consistent pressure from high torque electric reels which reduces the likelyhood of you pulling hooks.

Off NSW and Southern Queensland anglers chase Snapper, Trag, Jewfish, Bluespot Flathead and Pearl Perch with light deep drop combos.

If you're in the tropics you can fish deep water inside of ribbon reefs for Coral Trout, Nannygai, Red Emperor and other reefies.

Often anglers use heavy sinkers upto 10oz on single and double hook rigs with large, thin gauge circle hooks.

In shallower water when there is little current anglers also use metal jigs, soft plastics on heavy jigheads and lucanus style jigs. Sometimes changing things up with a lure is what it takes to entice lethargic fish to bite.
